The city of Cleveland Heights is holding a public hearing on Monday, August 8th at 7pm in Council Chambers at Cleveland Heights City Hall.
The hearing is about a proposed zoning ordinance change. To get the details and to read the ordinance click here.
This is important to Oakwood for 2 reasons:
1. The historic Oakwood Clubhouse falls under this ordinance. We do not know what effects this proposed ordinance will have on the rest of Oakwood. Will this ordinance open the door for further development on the Cleveland Heights side of Oakwood?
We don't know.
But if you care about Oakwood please try to find out. If you are a lawyer or urban planner or have friends who are, please discuss this and send your opinions on this important question to us.
2. This ordinance is being proposed as an emergency. Making it an emergency means that citizens CANNOT bring a referendum against it.
Certainly some things must be passed as emergencies. But the reason given for making this an emergency are proposed changes for Coventry School.
Coventry School has not been used as a school since 2007.
The ideas for using Coventry School are wonderful, and some of them have been implemented already. But is passing this ordinance as an emergency measure really necessary?Couldn't a variance have been granted to permit the company, Open Office, to move into Coventry School?
Here is an article with the details from Patch about the proposed changes for Coventry School.
Cities all over Ohio use the tactic of passing legislation as an emergency as a means to prevent citizen referendums.
No matter how you feel about this particular ordinance, it is in our best interest to stop the city's practice of passing ordinances as emergencies.
CH City Council may vote on this ordinance on August 22.
PLEASE ATTEND THE MEETING ON MONDAY OR EXPRESS YOUR OPINION ABOUT THIS ISSUE BY WRITING OR EMAILING THE CLEVELAND HEIGHTS PLANNING DIRECTOR, Richard Wong at rwong@clvhts.com or calling 291-4868.
Or, contact Cleveland Heights City Council.at this link or the contact information listed
PLEASE TELL THEM NOT TO PASS THIS ORDINANCE AS AN EMERGENCY and ASK WHAT IMPACT THIS WILL HAVE ON DEVELOPING OAKWOOD.
See you there!
(We have attached a document with the excerpt from the Cleveland Heights City Charter that states an emergency ordinance is not subject to referendum.)
